Handloader guide · Chapter 2

Develop a load

Load development in Qual8 is a loop: plan a cycle, load it, shoot it, read the result, and let the result set the next cycle. Each cycle adds to one picture of how your rifle answers powder charge and seating depth.

One cycle, start to finish

Six steps, then the loop repeats

Do Reloading setup first. Range Day uses the same photo and marking screens as a Range Session.

1

Start a load development

  1. Press Reload, then Start new load development.
  2. Check the Rifle. Under Workflow, leave Full 8-bench workflow selected for your first load.
  3. Under Components, choose the bullet, brass, powder and primer.
  4. Under First tuning step, leave Pressure survey selected.
  5. Under Charge window, type the Published min (gr) and Published max (gr) from your load data.
  6. Press Acknowledge safety, then Acknowledge in the box that opens. The button now reads "Safety acknowledged".
  7. Press Start load development.

Why the published window comes from you

Qual8 plans every charge inside the minimum and maximum you type here, and it will not lock a later cycle outside them. It does not replace your reloading manual.

Acknowledge safety is grey? It lights once the published minimum and maximum are typed. The list under the boxes says what is left.

Full 8-bench workflow or Express? The screen's words: Full is the "Full build record and loaded-ammunition measurements through all 8 benches." Express will "Skip the 8-bench build record and loaded-ammunition measurement review."

Work the benches

The Build Record walks your brass through the benches in order.

  1. Fill in 1 Resizing and press Save Bench 1.
  2. Carry on through 2 Brass Prep, 3 Annealing, 4 Priming and 5·6 Powder & Bullet.
  3. Press Review the charge ladder. The screen that opens, headed "Structured Logbook", lists what to load.
  4. Press CONTINUE TO LOADING EXECUTION.

Why the benches go in order

The screen says it: "the benches build on each other, so they go in order." Each bench opens when the one before it is complete.

3

Load the rounds and check them

  1. On Loading Execution, tick each line as you do it at the bench.
  2. Choose Measure every loaded round now or Defer measurements to Bench 7 Summation.
  3. Press CONTINUE TO BENCH 7.
  4. On Bench 7, measure your loaded rounds if you have the tools, and enter Rounds ready to shoot for this reloading cycle.
  5. Press Save Bench 7 & continue to Range Day.

Why you finish this before the range

Each record closes when the next one starts. The Build Record becomes review-only once loading starts, and Bench 7 closes when the range session starts. What you save at the bench is what the result is read against.

Shoot Range Day

  1. Choose the target: a Sigma8 target or your own paper target. Press Start range session.
  2. Press Confirm setup and conditions.
  3. For each group: answer whether the barrel was cooled, answer Recoil Sight Picture, and record the pressure signs you saw. With a chronograph, type each shot's speed, or press DNR for a shot the chronograph did not register.
  4. Press Continue to Target Photos, photograph the targets and check the holes.
  5. On the screen headed "Evidence review", press Ready to continue, then Return to session.
  6. Press View Results.

Why pressure signs are recorded group by group

The pressure survey climbs through your charge window. The signs you record on one group decide whether the higher charges stay open. Record them before you shoot the next group.

Read the result and take the next step

  1. The result shows the RESPONSE SURFACE: every charge and seating depth you have fired for this load, in one picture.
  2. The main button names the next step, for example START CYCLE 2: SEATING DEPTH TUNING. One press accepts the result and starts that cycle.
  3. To plan the next cycle yourself, accept first: SAVE THIS RESULT AND STOP on a pressure survey, ACCEPT SEATING RESULT on a seating depth cycle. Then choose QUAL8'S PLAN or YOUR OWN PLAN, press LOCK NEXT CYCLE, and say where the next cycle's loading starts.
  4. Either way, the next cycle is waiting to be loaded.

Why one change at a time

Each cycle changes one thing, powder charge or seating depth, and holds the other. That is what lets the picture show which change did what.

Finish the load

  1. When the load is where you want it, accept the result with SAVE THIS RESULT AND STOP or ACCEPT SEATING RESULT.
  2. Press FINISH WITHOUT LQ, or PROVE THIS LOAD / START LQ100 when Qual8 offers it. Do not press SAVE AND PAUSE first: it takes the finish buttons away for that result.
  3. Your Load Card now holds the load: its components, sizing and annealing, the final recipe, and a link to every cycle.
  4. It sits on the rifle's page under Ammunition Inventory, with your other handloads, and Range Setup offers it when you start a session.

Why finishing is its own step

Until you finish, the Load Card reads "IN DEVELOPMENT". Finishing seals one version you can always go back to. It does not qualify the load: that is Load Qualified.
