Test Lab is a separate Qual8 feature, like Qualifiers. It is not a required step after Range Session, Factory Ammo Comparison, or Reloading Workflow.

Keeps the rifle, ammunition, target, velocity, and conditions connected across ordinary shooting.

Muzzle Device Shift

How far does point of impact move when the muzzle device changes?
Use this whenYou are changing between a bare muzzle, brake, or suppressor and need to know whether the rifle’s zero moves.
You’ll learnHow far the group center shifted and whether velocity changed.

Compare two saved muzzle configurations—bare muzzle, brake, or suppressor—using the same rifle and ammunition. Qual8 measures the movement of the group center and reports whether velocity changed.

Precision Baseline Test

What will this rifle and ammunition repeat?
Use this whenYou want a realistic precision baseline instead of judging the system by its best group.
You’ll learnThe estimated five-shot group size of the rifle-ammunition system and its 80% estimate range.

Use the same rifle and ammunition on Sigma8 paper at 100 yards. Every plan can run this test on every rifle. The plan sets the default length, but the shooter may choose either the 10- or 20-shot protocol.

Why shoot 20? The estimated group size does not change, but the 80% estimate range narrows by about 29%, giving the shooter more confidence in a close call.

The Break-In Study

Did the barrel gain speed during break-in?
Use this whenYou are breaking in a new barrel and want to document rounds, cleaning events, and—when available—velocity.
You’ll learnWith chronograph data, whether the barrel gained speed relative to its own shot-to-shot variation.

Record the barrel’s break-in as you actually perform it. Log rounds and cleaning events; the study accepts any break-in method. With chronograph data, Qual8 determines whether the barrel got faster against its own shot-to-shot spread rather than an arbitrary threshold.

Ladder Test

What happens to vertical point of impact as powder charge changes at distance?
Use this whenYou are developing a handload and want to study powder charge against vertical impact at distance.
You’ll learnWhether vertical point of impact changes consistently across the charge range instead of relying on one shot.

Start from one Load Card, vary powder charge only, and shoot a cooled three- to five-shot group at each charge at 300 yards or farther. Mapping every impact to its charge keeps a single noisy shot from being mistaken for a node.

Precision Baseline by tier

One Test. Two Protocol Lengths.

Every version asks the same question: what will this exact rifle-and-ammunition system repeat? The plan sets the default length, never the limit.

Factory-Ammunition Tiers

Ten rounds by default.

Marksman and Sharpshooter begin with two cooled five-shot groups to establish a useful baseline without consuming a full box of factory ammunition. They may choose the 20-shot protocol when they want the tighter estimate range.

How the Break-In Study handles the data

Preserve the Method. Protect the Result.

The study runs alongside the shooter’s actual break-in and cleaning process. Its job is to document what happened and measure speed without overstating what the data can prove.

Use the Break-In Method You Chose

Follow the rifle or barrel maker’s instructions when provided. Qual8 does not require one break-in method; it records rounds and cleaning events so the pattern is preserved.

Keep the First Clean-Bore Shot

Qual8 keeps the first round after cleaning out of the main barrel-speed trend so it cannot distort that result. The shot is not discarded. Its velocity is compared with later valid velocities through the next cleaning event.

Share Numbers, Not Identity

When a study begins, the numerical data goes to the study. Name, screen name, notes, photos, and shooting location do not go with it.

State Only What the Study Shows

The study measures speed, not accuracy. As the data grows, Qual8 can compare break-in and cleaning patterns with speed results, but it cannot prove that a break-in method caused them. Public community results are still being built.
