Sharpshooter guide · Chapter 2

Cold Bore Response

Where does your first shot from a cold barrel land, compared with the rest of the group? Mark that shot in your sessions and Qual8 answers it for each rifle, along with where your groups go as the barrel heats.

During a session

Three steps, every time the barrel starts cold

Cold Bore Response is not a session of its own. You feed it from a Range Session, a Factory Ammo Comparison, or an LQ100, LQ500 or MQ-600 attempt. Hunt Qualified does not feed it.

1

Tick the box before Group 1

  1. On the session's shooting screen, under Group 1, tick Track Cold Bore Response (CBR).
  2. The screen answers: "Shot #1 is blue. Mark Shot #1 on the target too."

Why it has to be done at the range

Only you know which hole was the first shot, and only on the day. Tick the box before you shoot Group 1 and note where that shot went.

No box on the screen? If you told Setup the barrel was cleaned and you fired no rounds before Group 1, Qual8 leaves the box off and says why: "A clean bore is fouled before it is trusted, so Shot #1 is a clean-bore shot and does not count toward Cold Bore Response."

Mark Shot #1 on the target

  1. Photograph the target as usual.
  2. On the marking screen Qual8 asks: "Tap Shot #1 on your target." Tap the hole your first shot made.
  3. Finish marking and accept the session.

Marking, step by step: Check the holes.

3

Read it on the rifle's page

  1. Open the rifle, then Rifle Performance History, then Cold Bore Response.
  2. Until Qual8 has enough to call it, the screen counts for you: "2 of 4 first shots logged" and "2 of 4 sessions logged".
  3. Then the first reading is Cold Bore Response: where the first shot lands against your normal group.
  4. The second is TDR · Thermal Drift Response: how far the group center moves as the barrel heats through a session. Any session with two or more groups feeds it; there is nothing to mark.

Why it takes more than one range day

One cold shot is one shot. Qual8 calls a result once it has four marked first shots from at least three range days.

Next: qualify the rifle and its ammunition
