Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Sigma8 Labs, the 8-Bench Framework, and the Qual8 app.
01
Sigma8 Labs — The Company
What is Sigma8 Labs?

Sigma8 Labs is a precision measurement, analysis, and education ecosystem for reloaders and precision rifle shooters. We build physical metrology tools that collect dimensional data, software (the Qual8 app) that interprets it, and structured educational content (the 8-Bench Framework) that teaches why both matter.

The tools measure. The app analyzes. The framework teaches. All three layers work together — each one makes the other more valuable.

What does "Control the Process. Trust the Shot." mean?

It's our operating philosophy. Precision isn't luck — it's the result of controlling every variable from the moment fired brass comes off a rifle to the moment the next round leaves the muzzle. When you've done the work at the bench, you earn the confidence to trust the shot in the field. That's what Sigma8 is built to help you achieve.

Who founded Sigma8 Labs, and where are you based?

Erie, Colorado, USA. Sigma8 Labs was founded by an aerospace mechanisms engineer with over 25 years of experience and a lifelong hunter, shooter, and reloader. The brand brings aerospace-level precision thinking to practical shooting — not as a marketing line, but as a lived practice. Sigma8 was built because nothing else existed that met his standard.

What does Sigma8 sell?

Phase 1: Precision metrology tools (shoulder bump gauges, bullet comparators, CBTO seating gauges, concentricity gauges, calibrated targets) and the Qual8 app subscription.

Phase 2: Print and education products — the Sigma8 Precision Logbook and 8-Bench Field Guide.

The long-term vision is a Sigma8 product at every bench. The 8-Bench Framework is both an educational structure and a product roadmap.

What is Sigma8 NOT?

Not a tactical or military lifestyle brand. Not an influencer-driven company. Not a budget or commodity tool seller. Not competition-only. We don't sell hype. The Qual8 app has no distance calculator — it qualifies ammunition, it does not recommend engagement distances. That line is yours to draw, based on your own verified capability.

02
The 8-Bench Framework
What is the 8-Bench Framework?

The 8-Bench Framework is Sigma8's structured process for precision ammunition development. Each bench is organized around three instructional blocks: Basics, Control, and Tune. Basics explains the SAAMI-spec baseline. Control identifies the variables you hold constant across rounds. Tune identifies the variables you deliberately change to drive load development. The logbook records the work so it can be repeated, compared, and analyzed in Qual8.

What happens at each bench — in plain language?

Bench 1 — Resizing: Push fired brass back to SAAMI spec so it chambers safely in any factory rifle.

Bench 2 — Brass Prep: Trim to length, chamfer, deburr, clean primer pockets, sort by weight. Every case going to the range should be dimensionally identical.

Bench 3 — Annealing: Restore neck ductility so brass grips bullets consistently firing to firing.

Bench 4 — Priming: Seat primers flush-below the case head, consistently, every time.

Bench 5 — Powder: Weigh every charge. Consistent charge weights produce consistent velocities — your primary velocity driver.

Bench 6 — Seating: Seat bullets to a controlled depth. CBTO controls jump to the rifling — your primary accuracy driver.

Bench 7 — Summation (Σ): Quality audit. Every control point checked before you leave for the range.

Bench 8 / Qual8 — Iteration: Shoot, record, analyze, improve. The Qual8 app turns range data into a response surface showing where your rifle shoots best.

What is a control point vs. a tune variable?

A control point is a measured variable you hold constant within a tune — shoulder bump, brass weight, primer pocket depth, annealing method. Measured, verified, and locked so they don't introduce noise into your data.

A tune variable is what the Qual8 optimization engine deliberately varies and maps. In V1, there are two: charge weight (primary velocity driver) and seating depth (primary accuracy driver). Everything else is locked as a control point.

What is CBTO and why measure it instead of COAL?

COAL (Cartridge Overall Length) measures to the bullet tip — which varies from bullet to bullet due to tip shape variation. CBTO (Cartridge Base to Ogive) measures to a consistent geometric point on the bullet's curved ogive surface using a comparator. Consistent CBTO means consistent jump to the rifling, which means consistent accuracy. Target: the tightest spread you can achieve across a batch.

Why anneal? Can I skip it?

Every time brass is fired and resized, the neck hardens. Stiffer brass means inconsistent neck tension — which means inconsistent pressure — which means inconsistent accuracy. Without annealing, brass necks eventually crack and case life shortens significantly. An annealing machine pays for itself through extended brass life before you even count the accuracy gains. If you're doing load development, inconsistent neck tension will contaminate your data.

What does Bench 7 actually do?

Bench 7 is the pre-range quality audit — the capital Σ (summation) of everything built at Benches 1-6. Every control point is checked against its threshold: shoulder bump (.002"), brass weight spread (±1 grain), primer pocket condition, flash hole status, case mouth chamfer, annealing method. If anything is out of spec, you correct it before you leave. Shooting with a known process deficiency wastes ammo, time, and data.

03
The Qual8 App
What is Qual8?

Qual8 is Sigma8's load development analytics platform. It captures velocity, group measurements, environmental conditions, and component data from your range sessions, then applies constrained multi-variable optimization to identify the charge weight and seating depth where your rifle performs best. It works for both handloaders and factory ammo shooters.

Is Qual8 only for experienced reloaders?

No. Qual8 isn't just for reloaders — it's how you become one. Factory ammo shooters can start by running factory comparisons and tracking their rifle's performance over time. The app guides users through a natural progression from factory shooting to understanding the variables that matter, until the jump to handloading is a small step rather than a leap.

What are HPOI and HPOV?

HPOI (Highest Probability of Impact) is the spatial point where your rifle concentrates shots most consistently — the statistical clustering center driven by barrel harmonic nodes.

HPOV (Highest Probability of Velocity) is the velocity-domain equivalent: the velocity value where shots concentrate with highest probability, regardless of outliers dragging up the arithmetic mean.

When HPOI and HPOV peak at the same load variation, you've found a true harmonic node — the pressure regime where barrel vibration produces the most consistent exit conditions.

What does the app NOT do?

Qual8 does not generate load data. It does not replace your reloading manual. It does not recommend charge weights outside the safety boundaries you set. It has no distance calculator and does not recommend engagement distances — the app qualifies ammunition, not shots. You draw that line using your own verified capability data.

How does Qual8 handle my data if I downgrade?

User data is never deleted. The engine is the gate, not data access. A shooter who downgrades from Elite to Marksman still sees every rifle, every Tune, every session, every shot, every target photo. The optimization engine and paid features go dark — but your data is always there, waiting. You can also freeze your account: preserves all data, suspends login, stops billing.

04

Data is permanent across all tiers.

What is the "1 active rifle" gate?

The active-rifle gate applies to deeper workflows, not basic Range Sessions. Marksman gives free Range Sessions across every rifle, plus one active rifle fully unlocked for deeper factory-ammo comparison and qualification work. Premium Handloader gives one active rifle the patent-pending Reloading Workflow and handload optimization. Sharpshooter removes the factory-ammo gate across rifles. Elite removes the handloading gate across rifles.

Is there a discount for new subscribers?

Yes — all new subscribers receive 50% off their first year. Influencer promo codes offer additional discount pathways. Physical product bundles (logbook, metrology kit) also include Qual8 subscription credits. The goal is to get the app into your hands with as little friction as possible — you'll know within the first session whether it's right for you.

05
The Qual8 Badge System
What is the Qual8 badge system?

The badge system is the core qualification framework. One standard applies regardless of ammunition type — factory or handload, ammo is ammo. Badges: AQ (Accuracy Qualification), VQ (Velocity Qualification), LQ (Load Qualification — the graduation badge), FQ (Field Qualification — the rifle-level readiness badge), CBR (Cold Bore Response), and Proven 10x (durability super-badge).

What is the FQ (Field Qualification) badge?

FQ is the rifle-level readiness badge — the moment the shooter enters as the variable "in the field." Everything before FQ is controlled bench work. FQ validates that you and your rifle perform together under real field conditions.

Requirements: distance stations from 200–650 yards in 50-yard increments, shooting positions (prone, sitting, kneeling, standing), 3 groups × 3 shots at 100% inside vital zone, same-day, Sigma8 CV-verified calibrated targets. Pass/fail binary — no backing down to a lower distance.

What is an LQ badge?

LQ (Load Qualification) is the graduation badge — awarded when AQ and VQ are both achieved at the same charge weight and seating depth within a single tune. This is the moment a tune graduates from "exploring" to "qualified ammunition." It applies equally to handloads and factory ammo.

06
Factory Ammo & Comparisons
I don't reload. Can I still use Qual8?

Yes. Marksman starts free with Range Sessions across every rifle and complete factory-ammo comparison on one active rifle. Switch the active rifle quarterly. Sharpshooter is the factory-ammo lane when you want Factory Ammo Comparison, ammo ranking and comparison history, Factory Qualified records, Hunt Qualified records across all rifles, and Cold Bore / Thermal Drift summaries across every rifle.

What are the factory ammo test protocols?

Quick Test: 1 group of 5 shots per box. Fastest. Gives a clear winner in most cases.

Qualified: 2 groups of 3 shots per box. Recommended. Confirms results are repeatable.

Proven: 3 groups of 3 shots per box. Gold standard. Highest confidence ranking.

Can I measure factory ammo at home before going to the range?

Yes, and Sigma8 recommends it. The app supports optional pre-range measurements on factory ammo: CBTO (requires calipers + bullet comparator) and neck diameter (calipers only). These are entered via a rolling tally interface — the app computes min, max, average, and spread in real time. If groups are inconsistent and measurements were skipped, the app flags the uncontrolled variables that may be contributing.

07
Tools & Physical Products
What makes Sigma8's comparators different?

Standalone precision — no housing required. Every Sigma8 comparator is machined from 416 Stainless Steel and works as a fully capable standalone tool with any calipers you already own. This directly differentiates from the industry's proprietary insert model, which locks you into one manufacturer's ecosystem. Nothing becomes obsolete when you add a new rifle.

What are calibrated targets and why do I need them?

Sigma8 calibrated targets contain fiducial markers that allow the Qual8 app's computer vision system to verify actual target size and measure group dimensions precisely from a photo — no manual measurement required. They're also required for Field Qualification (FQ) badge verification. A free PDF is available via email capture on sigma8labs.com.

What is the Sigma8 Precision Logbook?

A structured paper logbook built around the 8-Bench Framework. It captures the same data as the Qual8 app — on paper, at the bench and range — for shooters who prefer analog records or want a backup to their digital data. Logbook purchase includes 3 months of Qual8 Sharpshooter tier.

08
Safety & Process
Does Qual8 tell me what charge weight to use?

No. Qual8 analyzes your data within boundaries you set. You are responsible for determining your safe minimum and maximum charge weight through published load data and your own pressure testing. The app never recommends outside your boundaries and does not replace your reloading manual.

What is the annealing safety rule?

Only the neck and shoulder region — approximately the top 20% of the case — is annealed. Never anneal the case head or body. The head must remain hard to contain chamber pressure. Annealing the full case creates a catastrophic failure risk. This is non-negotiable.

My rifle isn't performing. Where do I start?

Start with the Sigma8 FTR page. FTR walks you through a systematic elimination process — mechanical checks, shooter fundamentals, component consistency, barrel and chamber inspection, and optics — in the order most likely to find the issue fastest. If you reach the end without a resolution, you'll have a documented record of everything you eliminated. Hand that to your gunsmith and save yourself hours of diagnostic billing.

09
Brand Philosophy & Privacy
Does Sigma8 advertise?

No. Qual8 does not buy advertising. Partnerships are relationships — both sides have to genuinely believe in what the other is building. Sigma8 partners with people and brands whose values align with responsible hunting, precision, and doing things right. The founder's story, the product's data, and the users' shared screenshots are the marketing.

What does user data privacy look like in Qual8?

All user data is private by default. Aggregated data sharing is opt-out (default ON) with clear disclosure of exactly what is included — group sizes, velocities, scores, rifle, cartridge, components — and what is never included: names, emails, locations, serial numbers. Serial numbers are never captured. Opt out at any time in Settings → Data & Privacy.
